Arts Council Honors Revolutionary Visionaries Dec. 1

The Arts Council of Greater New Haven will honor outstanding organizations and members from the region at the annual Arts Awards Luncheon on Friday, December 1, at the New Haven Lawn Club. The event begins at 11:45 am. Tickets are $60 for Arts Council Members and $70 for non-members. The Arts Awards Luncheon is sponsored by Coordinated Financial Resources/Chamber Insurance Trust.

The theme of the 2006 Arts Awards, Revolutionary Visionaries, honors members of the community who envision the unimaginable and use the arts in revolutionary ways to engage the community, create extraordinary beauty and call for social change.

Seven outstanding award recipients, noted below, were selected by a community jury from 75 nominations.

Roslyn Milstein Meyer and Jerome Meyer—Recipients of The C. Newton Schenck, III Award for Lifetime Achievement in and Contribution to the Arts—True arts champions, whose visionary and passionate advocacy for the arts, dynamic leadership, unparalleled generosity and profound wisdom have touched and nurtured an entire arts community.

Arte Inc. - A revolutionary organization dedicated to educating, inspiring and promoting Latino art and culture and advocating for young and emerging artists in the community.

Nick Lloyd for Firehouse 12 - A visionary leader, who through the restoration of Firehouse 12, brought original and creative music, a state of the art recording studio and an exciting public space to New Haven’s 9th Square.

Delmance Ras Mo Moses - Gifted teacher, performer, cultural activist and community organizer whose arts programs on health, cultural diversity and violence prevention educate and strengthen all generations.

Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History - A world class museum and research institution, using cultural festivals, exhibitions, sculpture and visionary educational programs to engage people of all ages.

Youth Rights Media - An organization using the art and technology of video to equip young people with the tools and strategies necessary for affecting change within themselves and their community.

Photographers invited to interpret Light

Exposure Exhibitions was established in 2005 by Connecticut designer/photographer Jennifer Jane as a means to provide opportunity and exposure for emerging professional and amateur photographers with a passion and talent for photography. The work presented at Exposure Exhibitions embraces diverse cultures, geographical locations, and individual experiences.

As an extension of FILM SPEED: Photographic Scavenger Hunt, Gallery One Whitney is hosting a monthly theme photographic project called Find & Capture. Participants are invited to interpret and email their vision of the monthly topic (this month: light). The best of the entries will be posted online at the end of each month and winners will show in the gallery!

Focus On Kids helps families in transition

Jewish Family Service of New Haven is now offering the successful Focus On Kids Program to help resolve divorce issues peacefully and effectively, establishing care arrangements that meet the needs of children. Parents are referred to the program by lawyers and courts, and attend sessions that target ways to resolve conflicts while focusing on the child(ren) and not on the personal issues surrounding the divorce.
