Elm City YouthBuild is a youth and community development initiative based in New Haven. targeting young people who are challenged by personal, social and economic conditions. Participants are actively involved in the decision-making and governance of YouthBuild, serving to demonstrate leadership skills in the implementation and evaluation of program activities. Youth receive an incentive stipend for their participation, as well as a variety of services and supports to promote their continuing success as responsible community members.
• Students will pursue either their GED or a high school diploma
• Students will earn a weekly stipend through active participation
• Students will gain construction trade experience through vocational training and contributing to the creation of affordable housing.
• Students will have access to a national network of young adults
• Students will receive assistance with job placement and seeking post-secondary education.
Interested applicants must meet at least 3 of the following requirements before being considered eligible for the program:
• Between ages 17-24 on date of enrollment.
• member of a disadvantaged youth population such as a member of a low-income family, youth in foster care (including youth aging out of foster care), a youth offender, a youth who is an individual with a disability, a child of an incarcerated parent, or a migrant youth.
• High School Drop Out
• Deficient in basic skills, despite attainment of a secondary school diploma, General Education Development (GED) credential, or other state recognized equivalent (including recognized alternative standards for individuals with disabilities)
• Referred by local secondary school for participation in a YouthBuild program leading to the attainment of a secondary school diploma.

New Haven Celebrates Jazz with Documentary Film and Live Performance Series
New Haven Office of Cultural Affairs and the New Haven Free Public Library will present a jazz documentary film series on Wednesday evenings in four branch libraries throughout the city July 11-August 1. An additional screening and performance on Friday, August 3, features the Neighborhood Music School's Summer Jazz Camp in Temple Street Plaza.

Older adults stay cool in New Haven centers
All six senior centers in New Haven are open during the day and serve as cooling centers for the elderly. When the temperature rises above 90 degrees, two centers stay open until 8pm: 1) The Dixwell/Newhallville Senior Center at Bethel AME Church, 255 Goffe St. (946-8541) and 2) East Shore Senior Center at 411 Townsend Ave. (946-8549 or 8544).

Disney Minnie Grants Available to Support Youth Service Projects
The Walt Disney Company (http://www.disney.com/) and Youth Service America (http://www.ysa.org/) have announced grants of up to $500 each to support youth-led service projects. These grants support youth (ages 5-14) in planning and implementing service projects in their community. Teachers, older youth (15-25), youth-leaders, and youth-serving organizations are also eligible to apply, provided that they that engage younger youth (5-14) in planning and implementing the service. Service projects must take place between October 1 and November 26, 2007. Projects can address themes such as the environment, disaster relief, public health and awareness, community education, hunger, literacy, or any issue that youth identify as a community need. The New Haven School Readiness Council is inviting community stakeholders to join in the work of the Early Childhood Plan Task Force this summer. We are having the first full meeting of the Task Force on: Wednesday, July 11, 5:30-8pm at Conte School, 511 Chapel St. Dinner is at 5:30 and work starts promptly at 6pm.
