Leave a Legacy insert in New Haven Register

Dear Colleague,
In order to sustain our mission in the community both today and tomorrow, non-profit organizations in the Greater New Haven area will need to rely more than ever on bequests from our donors. Many future bequests are in the process of being planned right now, but we are not necessarily privy to the conversations that take place between individuals and their professional advisors.

When those conversations take place, will donors think of your organization?

The mission of our Connecticut Leave a Legacy committee is to educate the public about the benefits of leaving bequests to charities in wills or other estate plans. The New Haven chapter of Leave a Legacy is committed to a community campaign that involves all types of non-profit groups. Leave a Legacy does not solicit gifts for any particular organization. Our goal is to simply assist practitioners and their clients by motivating them to choose a charity that may have touched them personally so that they, in turn, may make a difference in the lives of others in their own community -- forever.

Help us to help us all

It is our goal to reach people who might not ordinarily see the importance of having a will in the first place, and then realize how they can use that instrument to support their favorite charitable purposes. We believe we can help influence those individuals and their advisors by partnering with the New Haven Register to produce a special advertising supplement called LEAVE A LEGACY, which will be published in the Register on Thursday, June 5th. You can help us get the message across to your potential donors by submitting an advertisement to promote public awareness about your organization in this special Leave a Legacy supplement. It will be distributed to over 81,000 residents in Greater New Haven. In addition, the Thursday edition of the New Haven Register is one of the most widely read throughout the area.

A representative of the New Haven Register will be contacting you soon about this supplement. You may wonder if you can afford it, but can you afford not to be listed among the many other charitable organizations and allied professionals that will be listed? We encourage your participation and we, as well as our community, will be grateful for your support.

If you would like more information about Leave a Legacy, please visit our website at www.leavealegacyct.org.

Thank you for your consideration!

Photos Requested for Blue Star Banner Display at Library

Soon you will see flyers for my June Ives display on the Blue Star Banner and its history. People can hang this banner in their homes if they have a direct relative in the United States Armed Forces during a time of war or hostility. I would like to display photographs (copies only, please) of active-duty military who are current New Haven residents or who are connected in some way to New Haven. If you have a soldier or know of someone who has a soldier that fits that description, I would love to have a copy of a photograph of them in uniform for the June display. Please include their name and where they are serving, whether it is here in the United States or elsewhere in the world.

Have a little rBGH/rBST with your ice cream?

Ben & Jerry's was one of the first ice cream makers to label their ice creams as free of recombinant bovine growth hormones, or rBGH/rBST. However, some states are now trying to BAN the labeling of milk as hormone-free, claiming it is unfair because it implies hormone-free milk is safer. If you support the law as presently written, download and sign a letter to thank Ben & Jerry's for refusing to use artificial hormones in their ice cream - and get a free treat! Visit your nearest scoop shop on Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day, April 29, noon-8 pm.

Neighborhood Assistance Act (HB 5937) status report

Here is an update regarding the bill in the state legislature to reform the Neighborhood Assistance Act. The bill is currently sitting on the state House of Representatives calendar, awaiting action. If passed by both the state House and state Senate and signed in to law by the Governor, this bill will permit more types of businesses (LLCs, LLPs and sub s corporations) to be eligible for the tax credits offered under the program, in exchange for their donations to qualified nonprofits. Although the bill has been amended so that the level of tax credits available to these types of businesses is now only 25 percent (versus the 60 percent available for C corporations), this is something that can be corrected next year.

The important thing now is to get the bill passed so that LLCs, LLPs and sub s corporations are included. The main threat the bill now faces is inaction. House Democratic leadership, esp. Speaker James Amann of Milford (jim.amann@cga.ct.gov / 1-800-842-1902 and State Representative Cameron Staples (cam9123@hotmail.com / 1-800-842-8267), need to hear from nonprofits supporting passage of this bill.

Please call or e-mail those state legislators from New Haven and, if you know them, those from nearby towns. You can obtain other e-mail addresses / phone numbers from the Connecticut General Assembly website (http://www.cga.ct.gov/) The message is simple:
HB 5937 (An Act Concerning The Neighborhood Assistance Act) will help my organization (name) a great deal as we seek to generate support from area businesses by giving businesses an extra incentive to give, despite the difficult economic times we are experiencing. PLEASE HELP bring this measure to a vote in the House.
Believe me, even or two calls / e-mails on a bill get noticed; four or more seem like a tsunami!

Please visit the Pets for the Elderly Foundation, an Ohio nonprofit that funds up to $50 of adoption costs when people over age 60 adopt a cat or dog from a participating shelter.
