Downtown Evening Soup Kitchen (DESK) seeks donations and volunteers

Food donations:
Call the kitchen (203-772-3400) before you come to make sure that DESK staff will be present—please do not leave food donations outside or on steps! Donations are gratefully accepted 1-4 pm Sunday through Thursday.

Volunteer Opportunities:
DESK currently needs assistance in all aspects of operations Monday and Wednesday from 11am to 3 pm, Tuesday and Thursday 1-3 pm. Work is varied, but may include preparing and cooking meals, running the food pantry, making bag lunches, unloading the van, etc. Serving shifts are also open on some Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday evenings for individuals or new groups.

Narrative’s first annual poetry contest

Entries are being accepted now until July 18 with prizes and publication for the top three winners, and a public announcement of all winners and finalists via the Internet and in hard-copy literary trade publications.

The contest is open to all poets. Entries must be previously unpublished and must not have been previously chosen as a winner, finalist, or honorable mention in another contest. Each entry may contain up to five poems. You may enter as many times as you wish, but we encourage you to be selective and to send your best work. All entries will be considered for publication.

Independent Film Festival in Milford seeks film entries

The Milford Public Library and the Milford Fine Arts Council are sponsoring an independent film festival. Cash prizes will be awarded in two divisions: under 18 ($100/$75/$50) and over 18 ($150/$100/$50). There is a $15 entry fee for the first submission and a $10 fee for the second. Rules and entry form can be downloaded from www.milfordarts.org. Entry deadline is July 10 (postmarked) for up to two entries per filmmaker.

Winning films will be presented August 1 and there will be an awards ceremony August 13.

Funding Announcement for the Emergency Food and Shelter Program under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009

New Haven County has $310,654 in Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 available for public institutions and nonprofit 501(c)3 organizations (ther organizations should apply in partnership with an eligible 501(c)3 organization). Organizations eligible to apply for EFSP funding serve in the following towns: Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethany, Branford, Cheshire, Derby, East Haven, Guilford, Hamden, Madison, Meriden, Middlebury, Milford, Naugatuck, New Haven, North Branford, North Haven, Orange, Oxford, Prospect, Seymour, Southbury, Wallingford, Waterbury, West Haven, Wolcott.

EFSP funds must supplement direct service cost of existing year-round soup kitchen, meals on wheels, food pantry, emergency shelter, emergency rental assistance, mortgage foreclosure prevention and emergency utility assistance programs. Awarded EFSP funds must also increase the number of clients served during the period of Apr. 1–Oct. 31, 2009.

Entries due May 13 for New Haven Public Library Poetry Contest

The New Haven Public Library Poetry Contest is part of the International Festival of Arts and Ideas’ Favorite Poem Project. Children, teens and adults may visit any New Haven library branch to select a word from the Poetry Trees to use in an original poem. Entries are due by May 13 for judging by a library panel.

Winners from all categories at each branch will be invited to read their poems at a special event to be held during the Festival at Starbuck’s Restaurant on the New Haven Green on Saturday, June 20, 1-3 pm. Book prizes will be awarded to winners, and Starbucks will provide free samples of their delicious drinks to attendees. Exact Change will present an afternoon of music, theater, and poetry aboard public buses in July. The Arts Council of GNH seeks solo artists and small ensembles to participate--innovative ideas which engage people of all ages are encouraged. Project artists will receive a small stipend. The Color of Words is currently producing videos for the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, several short films, and a youth-based, youth-produced TV show, The Eazy. The TV show will include all sorts of talent--singers, dancers, actors, rappers, athletes, inventors and the list goes on. Regional youth are invited to open auditions on May 11 and 12, 3-6pm, at New Haven Public Library, 133 Elm St.

Try a new book club this summer

The New Haven Public Library will be hosting a new bookclub, The Elm Street Book Group, which launches on Wednesday, May 27, from 6-7pm at the Main Library. Our first selection is Serendipity, a novel by Louise Shaffer, that received a starred review from Library Journal.
