Any tax-exempt organization that fails to file a tax return for three consecutive years will have its tax-exempt status automatically revoked. However, the IRS has just announced a special one-time filing relief program for certain small tax-exempt organizations in danger of losing their exempt status for failure to file.
Under this program, small exempt organizations have until October 15, 2010 to file their delinquent returns and come into compliance. Two types of relief are available for small exempt organizations: a filing extension for organizations required to file the Form 990-N (the "e-postcard") and a voluntary compliance program for organizations eligible to file the Form 990-EZ (the short form return for exempt organizations).
To see details about the relief program and a list of at-risk organizations, please click here.

What are public libraries for?
In America, we go to libraries to find jobs, create new careers and help grow our small businesses. We borrow books, journals, music and movies. We learn to use the latest technology. We get the tools and information needed to reenter the workforce. We get our questions answered, engage in civic activities, meet with friends and co-workers and improve our skills at one of the 16,600 U.S. public libraries. Every day, our public libraries deliver millions of dollars in resources and support that meet the critical needs of our communities. Read more...

Update on status of the 2010 US Census
Census workers are no longer knocking on doors to collect information about the questionnaire. However, they are still around town for two reasons:
1. Quality Assurance – the Census will choose some addresses to go back to and verify that the work was completed properly and accurately
2. Check Vacant Addresses – some Census workers will also be going around town checking “vacant” addresses to make sure they really are.
There is still time to be counted and to make a difference! New Haven will lose over $9,000 per "uncounted" person in Federal funding for programs such as WIC, education, public safety, job training, elderly services, hospitals, public health clinics, etc.
The Census hotline, is open 7 days a week, 8am-9pm. Until July 30, 2010, you can still be counted.
Non-English speakers may call 1-866-928-2010 (Spanish), 1-866-935-2010 (Chinese), 1-866-955-2010 (Korean),1-866-945-2010 (Vietnamese), 1-866-965-2010 (Russian), and 1-866-783-2010 (TDD for the hearing impaired).
