Ellen Barrett Guests at Library Yoga November and December

Can't afford to attend Ellen Barrett's Kripalu workshop right now?

Relax and enjoy some quality time with her as she leads the upcoming LIBRARY YOGA series, Wednesdays 1-2 pm at the Main Library. The series runs Nov. 2-Dec. 21, with no 11/23 class.  Classes are suitable for all fitness levels, and a $5 fee will be collected at each class. Wear comfortable clothing, and bring your own mat.

12th Annual Tassy Walden Awards for unpublished writers and illustrators of children's books

A free workshop to prepare for entering the New Voices in Children's Literature contest will be held at the Main Library on Nov. 15 at 5:30 pm. Founding members of the awards committee and former winners and finalists will be on hand to facilitate the workshop, with a review of guidelines and submission process. First index of state's civic engagement now available


The new partnership between Everyday Democracy and Connecticut Secretary of State Denise Merrill with the National Conference on Citizenship (funded partly by William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund) has resulted in the first Connecticut Civic Health Index. Highlights:

Bargain kitties in November

Throughout November The Animal Haven is offering kitten adoptions at a reduced rate of $75 (normally $125). They hope to encourage people to adopt one of 120 kittens now housed at the shelter for homeless pets. All kittens are sterilized, up to date with vaccinations and test negative for feline leukemia and aids.  This special adoption donation fee excludes cat and dog adoptions.  203 416 2565

“Introduction to Social Media” at Annie E. Casey Foundation Nov. 21, 1-4 pm

Workshop offers a practical introduction to new media. Participants will explore several new media and Web 2.0 concepts, including tagging, social networking, dynamic vs. static websites, cooperative document editing, blogging, RSS, openness, and the impact of Web 2.0 on organizational culture. Discussion will incorporate lessons learned from United Way’s ongoing effort to embrace a Web 2.0 culture and new media tools. Attendees will leave this course with a greater understanding of several web-based productivity and social media tools.

22nd Annual Trees of Hope Holiday Spectacular

The Ronald McDonald House of Connecticut holds their annual Trees of Hope to raise funds for children and families staying at RMHCT. What began with a dozen trees at the Governor’s Mansion has flourished into a nine-day display of over 100 decorated trees, wreaths and holiday baskets lining the halls of the Maritime Center in New Haven. All items are raffled off during this free public event and raffle tickets are only $1. Over 100 individuals, groups and corporations are involved in this noteworthy event.

Trees range from 4-8 feet in height and each tree has its own personality and story. Wreaths decorated by High School students and baskets created by groups and organizations accompany the trees.

Trees of Hope’s Presenting Sponsor is Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Additional Sponsors for this year’s event include Yale New Haven Hospital, Peoples United, First Niagara and CJ Fucci Construction.

Network Services: Two positions available at Wilton Library

Wilton Library seeks two p/t Network Services Assistants to cover help desk and audio/visual presentations. Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office 2007, web browsers, email, and photo editing software. Duties include setting up/operating audio/visual equipment (computers, projectors, microphones, movies, Xbox, Wii, etc.); providing exceptional help desk support for patrons and staff; updating and maintaining computers, iPads, Nooks, and Kindles; running reports; rebuilding computers and replacing peripherals as directed; etc. Successful applicant will be a team player and have proven interpersonal and teaching skills, along with problem solving abilities. Long Wharf Theatre’s 5th Annual Discovery Day

Last year over 200 parents and children attended this annual event. At 9 am Saturday, Nov. 19, the Discovery Day will help fund a family friendly March production entirely adapted, produced, designed, and built by the Next Stage residents, early career professionals training in specific fields of theatre.

This year kids will be prompted by a pair of headmistresses played by residents Maria DiFabbio and Marissa Friedman to begin a journey using the magic of theatre as their guide (think Hogwarts). The children will experience an acting class to help create their superhero personas, with lights and sound on the stage to enhance the experience. $5 per family or $2 per person;  information at 203-787-4282.

Connecticut Center for Arts and Technology seeks Manager

In Sept. 2012, Connecticut Center for Arts and Technology (CONNCAT) will open its first center at 4 Science Park, New Haven. The organization will provide job training to unemployed and underemployed adults, as well as an after school Youth Arts program, with the goal of getting 60 adults employed. They will also  work with 96 youth to help change the statistics of high school dropout rates.

The following opening is posted: Adult Services Manager. Provides vocational counseling and special support services in an adult education system; liaise with students, employers, teachers and human services providers, and outside agencies.
