Arte Inc. launches SLATE for students and parents

SLATE  combines in-school lessons for students with evening and weekend parent workshops in English and Spanish. Parent workshops include College Readiness, Financial Literacy and Digital / Computer Technology. Arte has partnered with the New Haven Promise, Comcast, Wells Fargo, CHET and others to offer these free programs, which often include lunch or dinner.

Library Yoga Wednesdays 1-2 pm at Main Library

DEBBIE KAHAN finishes up her current Library Yoga series tomorrow, April 25. Next week (May 2) MILLIE GRENOUGH will offer an alternate to Library Yoga, with a free discussion of stress reduction principles and practices, based on her book and training, OASIS IN THE OVERWHELM. And on May 9, Kripalu presenter ELLEN BARRETT launches another Library Yoga series (May 9-June 27).

Broken Umbrella Theatre premiers play during Westville's 15th Annual Art Walk

The nonprofit A Broken UmbrellaTheatre premieres a new play with music on two Saturdays, May 12 at noon, 2pm and 4pm, and May 19 at 2pm and 4pm, at 446A Blake St, New Haven, outdoors rain or shine. A cast of kid-friendly goofballs bring the invention of the bicycle to life in an original production infused with the spirit of the 1980s.  Running time 4o min; pay what you can. Higher One Offers 2nd annual scholarship opportunity as part of Financial Literacy Workshop

New Haven high school juniors and seniors and their parents are invited to a free workshop on money management designed specifically for those who are about to embark on the college experience. Attendees will be eligible to apply for a special Higher One scholarship.

Winners Announced in 4th Annual NHFPL Poetry Contest

The New Haven Free Public Library is pleased to announce the winners of the 2012 annual poetry contest, just revealed at the contest reception held on April 21.  Winners in each age category include: Youth, Willow Maia Giannotti-Garlinghouse for her poem entitled “From”; Teen, Tarpley Hitt, for her poem “Othniel Marsh”; and Adult, Samantha Ostrowski, for her poem “ELM 1638.”  Giannotti-Garlinghouse was also voted the “People’s Choice” winner at the reception.  

Cash prizes were provided by the NHFPL Foundation. Refreshments were provided by Starbucks on the Green and Subway Restaurant on Whitney Avenue. Each of the winning poems will be published in a forthcoming edition of NEW HAVEN REVIEW.  The library wishes to thank its 125th Presenting Sponsor, First Niagara, for support of this event.

Next month we'll need to feed the meter in New Haven til 9 pm

Starting next month, drivers will have to “feed the meter” until 9 pm—instead of 7, but not midnight—in what is being cast as a compromise.

The compromise was made to accommodate the complicated and, at times competing, interests of consumers, workers, businesses and residents.

The change will add two hours of enforced parking in the evenings Monday through Saturday — but not the additional five the city proposed last year. READ MORE

Gateway update

In preparation for the move to the new downtown campus this summer, the Gateway Community College Records Office at the college’s North Haven campus is now closed on Thursdays and Fridays. Students who need assistance from the Records Office on Thursdays and Fridays are asked to contact the Long Wharf office at 203-285-2020.

Curious about the Q Bridge?

The State DOT offers another open house on the new Pearl Harbor Bridge over the Quinnipiac River in New Haven--and it includes bus tours of the construction site.  The public is invited: Saturday, Apr 13, 10 am-2 pm, at  DOT Headquarters, 424 Chapel St. Tours will be held at 11 am, noon and 1 pm. ConnCAT opens in Science Park

Connecticut Center for Arts & Technology (CONNCAT) celebrates its grand opening Thursday April 12 at its 4 Science Park location in New Haven.  CONNCAT is an affiliate of the National Center for Arts & Technology (NCAT) founded by acclaimed McArthur Genius Prize winner, Bill Strickland. CONNCAT will become the fifth NCAT replication center in the nation, joining San Francisco, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Grand Rapids.  Details here

Upcoming Free Trainings from the Community Foundation for GNH

Two trainings  will be offered in Succession Planning, the first on May 7, 8:30 am-12:30 pm, for nonprofit executive directors only and the second on May 21, 4- 8 pm, for executive directors AND board members. Nancy Johnson and Hez Norton of Third Sector New England will facilitate both trainings.
On May 17, 4- 5:30 pm, Jackie Downing, Program Officer at The Community Foundation, will offer Grant Writing 101, examining standard elements in many grant applications. This class is for professional and volunteer grant writers with little to moderate experience.  Details here.

Follow-up to Arts Convening initiative

The Arts Convening was an exciting afternoon.  One of the most common themes was the need for arts in education asset mapping.  Indeed, it is mentioned on Reflections Sheets from all seven of the breakout groups. 
In an effort to determine which organizations are actively engaged in arts education in the greater New Haven area and to see what partnerships can be realized, The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven and Young Audiences Arts for Learning has prepared a mapping survey.  Please use the link below to access and complete the survey.

The Connecticut Center for Arts & Technology (ConnCAT) is located at Science Park,  provides job training to unemployed/underemployed adults. An after school arts program launches in June. They are currently posting two positions:
Adult Services Manager to liaise with students, employers, teachers and human services providers in order to promote ConnCAT opportunities. This management position is responsible for serving as advisor for an adult student population. Requirements include BA in education, business, training and development, social work or related and a min. of 2 years related experience. 
Youth Program Manager to oversee and coordinate programming, strategic and administrative issues, operations and resources, with direct supervision for Teaching Artists. Requires a BA and min. of 8 years related experience; Masters degree preferred.

Community Foundation Announces Capacity Building Workshops

The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven is partnering with its affiliate the Valley Community Foundation, to offer a series of free training sessions in 2012 to nonprofits serving the region. Topic and dates vary; additional workshops will be added throughout the year. 

Practical Skills and Strategies for Nonprofit Supervisors--Thursday, April 12,  9am-noon.
Succession Planning will be split into two workshops,   the first for Executive Directors only-- Monday, May 7, 8:30 am-12:30 pm. Second workshop is open to both Executive Directors and Board Members--Monday, May 21, 4-8 pm.
Grant Writing 101 is for professional and volunteer grant writers with little to moderate experience--Thursday, May 17, 4-5:30 pm. (At Main Library)

New Haven Oratorio Choir seeks Singers

Sopranos and altos are in particular demand. This chamber ensemble rehearses weekly on Wednesday nights at Church of the Redeemer, New Haven, under the leadership of Daniel Shaw.
