Volunteer Registration for New Haven Citywide Kindergarten Canvass

Volunteers from across New Haven will gather in August to welcome families of incoming kindergartners to the New Haven Public Schools. They will be knocking on doors on Saturday, August 18, 9am-noon and 1-4pm; Tuesday, August 21, 4:30-7:30pm; and Thursday, August 23, 4:30pm-7:30pm.

Volunteer trainings will be held on Tuesday August 14,  5:30-6:15pm and Saturday, August 18, 8:15-9am and 12:15-1 pm.  For more information:  jmamis@uwgnh.org or 203-691-4229.

Quinnipiac work study program is a great resource for community organizations

Quinnipiac University runs an Off-Campus Work Study program which places students at area nonprofits. The nonprofit pays a very small share of the salary (something like $2.62 hour). Students work 8-9 hours per week during the academic year. For details email Vincent Contrucci or call 203-582-5351

Elm City Resident Card is 5 Years Old!

And on Thursday, July 26, at 5:30 pm, a panel will discuss the history of the card and its impact on our City at the Main Branch of the New Haven Free Public Library. The panel consists of Kica Matos, former Community Services Administrator and NH Immigration Activist; Frank Sharry, Founder and Executive Director of America's Voice in Washington, DC; State Rep. Roland Lemar; and Hafid Dumet, CT DREAMer and Immigration Activist.  The public is encouraged to attend. Any questions may be directed to:

Do you offer meeting space to community organizations or businesses?

We'd like to prepare an inventory of available spaces for public use in New Haven, whether free or otherwise, so that we can refer people to such facilities when requested.  If you offer space, please send me the address and contact information, along with the following information:
  • room capacity?
  • parking?
  • fee?
  • hours available?
  • restrictions on use?
  • provide catering?
  • provide kitchen facilities?
This information will be compiled in a list to be held at the Main (Ives) Library, and I will share it upon request.  Thanks!!

New Haven Opens Cooling Centers Tuesday and Wednesday, City Health Department Warns Residents of the Health Risks of Extreme Temperatures

City of New Haven offers public “cooling centers” to provide relief from the heat.  No food will be served at these sites (and senior centers require 24 hour notice for senior meals).

Gateway Community College Closes July 16-20 for relocation


Gateway staff and faculty are moving into the new downtown campus! Both GCC’s Long Wharf campus and all of its North Haven campus (except for the Center for a Sustainable Future at North Haven) will be closed.
GCC students who have not yet come to campus to get the college’s new identification card allowing access to parking and other features of the new campus can get ID cards starting July 23 in the new campus at 20 Church Street:  north building, room 210, 8:30 am-4:30 pm Monday-Friday.

Neighborhood Music School’s Twilight Tuesdays Concert Series starts July 17

Dinners begin at 6:30 pm in the Park of the Arts, behind NMS at 100 Audubon Street, New Haven.  Concerts start at 7:15 pm (rain or shine). Dinner may be purchased the evening of each concert from Abel Caterers. $20 adult / $5 children 12 and under. Reserve in advance at 203-624-5189 x15.
July 17 - Dr. Caterwaul's Cadre of Clairvoyant Claptraps,  an eclectic ensemble influenced by Gypsy music, klezmer and traditional American music. Features NMS faculty member Adam Matlock (accordian); Brian Slattery (fiddle, banjo); Nathan Bontrager (cello); and Michael Paolucci (percussion).

July 24 – Craig Hartley Trio just back from the Marigliano Jazz Festival in Naples, Italy. Composer, songwriter, pianist and NMS faculty member Craig Hartley showcases music from his newly released album, "Books on Tape Vol. 1." Craig is joined by Carlo DeRosa on bass.

July 31 – Too Blue,  bluegrass quartet features Joan Harrison (banjo, lead vocals); Betsy Rome (guitar, vocals); Michael Sassano (mandolin); and Jamie Doris (bass, vocals).

New Haven Public Library Summer Hours

Saturday summer hours start this weekend July 7 with the Ives-Main Library open to the public from 12-5, all other branches closed.   We will resume regular Saturday hours with the Branches open on September 8.
